Promotion Requirements

Shodan

(1st Degree Black Belt)

For promotion to shodan students must meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate a working knowledge of the subjects described below:

1.      Sahō to Reihō  (Preparation and Etiquette)

Consistently exhibit the correct dōjō  formalities and informal etiquette, and be able to lead a class in the performance of the formal beginning and ending etiquette.

2.      Kihon (Fundamentals):

Demonstrate correct execution of all kihon, and show ability to instruct the correct essentials of kihon.

3.      Idō Kihon  (Basic Movement)

Demonstrate improved speed and focus while performing idō kihon, and show the ability to instruct kōhai in the correct essentials of idō kihon, including tenshin.

4.      Yakusoku Kumite  (Prearranged Sparring)

Demonstrate improved performance and instruction ability in:

  • Ippon Kumite (a single, lunging-in attack)

  • Nihon Kumite (two successive, lunging-in attacks)

  • Sambon Kumite (three successive, lunging-in attacks)

  • Yakusoku Kumite (choreographed sparring that resembles jiyū kumite)

5.       Jūhō Waza  (Escape Techniques)

Demonstrate the ability to escape from any of the grabbing techniques required up to shodan-ho when applied without pre-arrangement by a partner.

6.         Kumite  (Sparring) 

Demonstrate improved speed, timing, and footwork in kumite, using a greater variety of attack and defense techniques, plus improved strategy and anticipation of opponent's tactics.

6.       Kata  (Patterns)

7.       Bunkai (Application of Kata Techniques)

Demonstrate the bunkai of two techniques (or combination) from each required kata.

8.       Gakka  (Knowledge)

Students must be write an essay entitled, "My Role in Martial Arts," describing how martial arts affects them, and how they affect martial arts.

8.      Shikaku  (Eligibility)

To be eligible to test for shodan, students must successfully complete at least 6 months of supervised training since promotion to shodan-ho, exhibit appropriate behavior and attitude in the dōjō befitting a Black Belt, be at least 16 years of age, and submit a written request for promotion testing and pre-testing evaluation.
