Promotion Requirements

Nidan

(2nd Degree Black Belt)

For promotion to shodan students must meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate a working knowledge of the subjects described below:

1.      Sahō to Reihō  (Preparation and Etiquette)

Consistently exhibit the correct dōjō  formalities and informal etiquette, and be able to lead a class of yūkyūsha from beginning to end, including all formal etiquette and instruction in techniques and kata appropriate for yūkyūsha.

2.      Kihon (Fundamentals):

Demonstrate ability to instruct the correct kihon for beginning and intermediate students.

3.      Idō Kihon  (Basic Movement)

Demonstrate ability to instruct students in the correct execution of idō kihon, including tenshin.

4.      Yakusoku Kumite  (Prearranged Sparring)

Demonstrate improved performance and instruction ability in:

  • Ippon Kumite (a single, lunging-in attack)

  • Sambon Kumite (three successive, lunging-in attacks)

  • Gohon Kumite (five successive, lunging-in attacks)

  • Yakusoku Kumite (choreographed sparring that resembles jiyū kumite)

5.       Jūhō Waza  (Escape Techniques)

Demonstrate the ability to follow escape from any of the grabbing techniques required up to shodan (when applied without pre-arrangement by a partner) with an effective kansetsu-waza (joint-lock), nagewaza (throw/take-down), or shimewaza (choke).

6.         Kumite  (Sparring) 

Demonstrate improved speed, timing, footwork, and strategy in kumite, plus the ability to give basic instruction in kumite to intermediate students.

6.       Kata  (Patterns)

  • Seisan

  • One yūdansha tokui kata from the Shuri-te tradition**

  • One yūdansha tokui kata from the Tomari-te tradition**

    ** Not previously performed for shinsa

7.       Bunkai (Application of Kata Techniques)

Demonstrate the bunkai of two techniques (or combinations) from each kata selected.

8.       Gakka  (Knowledge)

Students must be able to correctly demonstrate and explain the current AAU/WKF tournament judging rules and signals.

8.      Shikaku  (Eligibility)

To be eligible to test for nidan, students must successfully complete at least one year of supervised training since promotion to shodan, exhibit appropriate behavior and attitude in the dōjō befitting a Black Belt, be at least 18 years of age, and submit a written request for promotion testing and pre-testing evaluation.
