Promotion Requirements

Gokyū (5th Kyū)

For promotion to gokyū students must meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate a working knowledge of the subjects described below:

1.      Sahō to Reihō  (Preparation and Etiquette)

Consistently exhibit the correct dōjō formalities and informal etiquette, and assist with the maintenance and cleaning of the dōjō (perfrom sōji) and preparations for classes and other events.

2.      Kihon (Fundamentals):

Demonstrate improved execution of all kihon.

3.      Idō Kihon  (Basic Movement)

Demonstrate improved execution of tenshin (body shifting) and combination techniques while moving or turning in a variety of directions.

4.      Yakusoku Kumite  (Prearranged Sparring)

Demonstrate ability to adjust to a partner's attack by utilizing correctly timed tenshin (body shifting), and to utilize combination counter-attacks against several types of pre-arranged attacks, including:

  • Ippon Kumite (a single, lunging-in attack)

  • Sambon Kumite (three successive, lunging-in attacks)

5.       Jūhō Waza  (Escape Techniques)

Ude-dori (katate  or morote) -- from the front, a partner grabs one or both sleeves at the upper arm or shoulder level, reaching straight across (right to left side, and left to right side), and the student must demonstrate the ability to apply an effective escaping technique.

6.         Kumite  (Sparring) 

          Safely perform kumite, applying sound principles of attack and defense, and obeying the instructions of the referee.

6.       Kata  (Patterns)

7.       Gakka  (Knowledge)

Students must be able to briefly explain the meaning of shūgyō no mokuteki (purpose of training) and sōji (clean-up).

8.      Shikaku  (Eligibility)

To be eligible to test for gokyū, students must successfully complete at least 40 hours of supervised training (minimum of two months) since promotion to rokkyū, exhibit appropriate behavior and attitude in the dōjō, and submit a written request for promotion testing and pre-testing evaluation.
