Promotion Requirements

Gokyū (5th Kyū)

For promotion to gokyū students must meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate a working knowledge of the subjects described below:

1.      Sahō to Reihō  (Preparation and Etiquette)

Exhibit the correct dōjō formalities and informal etiquette, as well as being able to correctly explain the basic concepts of the Dōjō Kun, and assist with the maintenance and cleaning of the dōjō (perform sōji) and preparations for classes and other events.

2.      Kihon (Fundamentals):

Demonstrate correct execution of the following bō kihon:

  • Mochi hantai (grip change)

  • Kirikaeshi uchi (block-counterstrike combination)

  • Sunakake (sand-scooping)

  • Kuritsuke (circular pinning of opponent's wrists)

Demonstrate correct execution of the following sai kihon:

  • Gedan Harai-Uke (low sweeping block)

  • Jōdan Uke-dome (High hook-block)

  • Uchi Uke (inward block)

  • Soto Hiraki-uke (outward open-sai block)

  • Tsuki-uchi (punching strike)

3.      Idō Kihon  (Basic Movement)

The following sai combinations with correct footwork and control of the sai:

  • Sai no Dōsa Renzoku Dai Ichi (gedan harai uke with gyaku tsuki-uchi/jun tsuki-uchi using yori-ashi)

  • Sai no Dōsa Renzoku Dai Ni (jōdan uke-dome with gyaku tsuki-uchi/jun tsuki-uchi using yori-ashi)

  • Sai no Dōsa Renzoku Dai San (chūdan soto uke with gyaku tsuki-uchi/jun tsuki-uchi using yori-ashi)

  • Sai no Dōsa Renzoku Dai Yon (jōdan soto uke/uchi-otoshi/gedan harai-uke with gyaku tsuki-uchi/jun tsuki-ate using yori-ashi)

  • Sai no Dōsa Renzoku Dai Go (chūdan uchi uke/soto yoko-men uchi/gedan harai uke with gyaku tsuki-uchi/jun tsuki-uchi using yori-ashi)

4.      Yakusoku Kumite  (Choreographed Sparring)

Demonstrate ability to adjust to a partner's attack by utilizing correctly timed tenshin (body shifting), and to utilize combination counter-attacks with the , such as:

  • Against jōdan tsuki:  use kiri-kaeshi uchi with tenshin.

  • Against uchi-otoshi:  use jōdan sukui-uke and uchi-otoshi with tenshin.

  • Against uchi-otoshi:  use jōdan sukui-uke and gedan uchi. with tenshin.

5.       Kata  (Patterns)

6.       Gakka  (Knowledge)

Students must be able to briefly describe the major parts of the sai (at a minimum:  the tsuka, saki, moto, yoku, tsume, tsukagashira, and monouchi), and demonstrate the difference between honte-mochi and gyakute-mochi.  In addition, students must be able to name the current sōke of our style (Shōda Hideo) and its two principle namesakes (Aragaki Seisho and Aragaki Ankichi).

7.      Shikaku  (Eligibility)

To be eligible to test for gokyū, students must successfully complete at least 40 hours of supervised training (minimum of two months) since promotion to rokkyū, exhibit behavior and attitude in the dōjō that is a good example to their junior students, and submit a written request for promotion testing and pre-testing evaluation.
